Information:

Lycopene is a vegetable pigment which is fat-soluble. It is responsible for the red or orange color present in certain fruits and vegetables, with the tomato being one of the foods richest in this substance.

It belongs to the carotenoid family, whose substances cannot be synthesized by the human body. Thats why it's so important to supplement through good nutrition. Moreover, when we eat fresh tomatoes, we can only assimilate a very small quantity of lycopene (not even 1%). Lycopene mixed with oil, however, is assimilated almost entirely.

Studies:

A study done by researchers at the University of Harvard´s National Cancer Institute in 2002 found that the consumption of lycopene reduced the possibilities of developing prostate cancer by 45%. Other studies discovered that lycopene also reduces cholesterol levels in the form of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), which produces atherosclerosis, showing that the ingestion of tomatoes reduces the incidence of cardiovascular diseases.

Still other studies showed that people who regularly consumed lycopene were less exposed to cancers affecting the digestive and reproductive systems, such as those of the colon and prostate.

Later studies showed the anti-aging properties of lycopene. One study was performed on a group of 90 nuns in the south of Italy with ages ranging from 77 to 98. Those with higher levels of lycopene in their blood had greater agility when performing all types of activities.
